The numbering of the size corresponds to the measured bearing surface circumference from heel buttress to heel buttress and the shape of the freshly prepared hoof.

For horses and bigger ponys we have a round shape (F for Front) and a elongated shape (R for Rear).
For smaller ponys we have a mixed form of front and rear hoof shape (U for Uni).
